Wayne State Athletics 21st In the Nation

Wayne State University is 21st in the nation with 292.50 points in the latest 2007-08 U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings released earlier today. It was the final winter report.

WSU earned 208.5 points from three winter sports teams (fencing is a combined men's and women's championship).

Wayne State received 73.5 points in women's swimming and diving based on the squad's sixth place finish at the NCAA Championship last month in Columbia, Missouri.

The Warrior fencing teams (men's and women's combined) earned 63 points after finishing ninth at the NCAA Championship last month in Columbus, Ohio.

WSU's men's swimming and diving squad placed sixth at the NCAA Championship and garnered 72 points.

WSU is third among GLIAC schools trailing national leader Grand Valley (1st) and Ashland (14th).

The latest update included the winter sports of men's and women's basketball, fencing, men's and women's ice hockey, rifle, skiing, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's indoor track and field, and wrestling.

The next update will be May 22nd and will include the spring sports championships that have concluded. The final standings for 2007-08 will be released on June 11th.

At this time a year ago, WSU was tied-for-22nd with 277 points. Wayne State placed 24th in 2006-07, the best finish ever in school history.
