During the next year, the Wayne State University Department of Athletics will be celebrating its 90th year. In the fall of 1917, Detroit Junior College hired David L. Holmes as its first Director of Athletics.

"This 90 year celebration is not only an opportunity to reflect and acknowledge a history rich in academic and athletic success, but a means to look forward toward a century of WSU athletics," stated Rob Fournier, WSU Director of Athletics. "With the participation of our former student-athletes, coaches, staff and alumni, we can retell part of that impressive history that people readily remember ... and maybe more so, that which should never be forgotten."

The first DJC athletic event was a basketball game against the Detroit College of Law on January 19, 1918, at Central High School.

The first football game was played on October 6, 1918 at Assumption.
