SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Wayne State University baseball team (3-7) lost its sixth in a row, 14-5, at Drury University (6-6) on Thursday evening.
Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) and Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) had two hits and an RBI each, while Adam Kaminski (Clinton Twp., Mich./Mt. Clemens) drove in a pair.
Drury was led by R.J. Knese, who went 4-for-5, as well as Joe Rohlfing and Dane Hughes, who finished with three hits apiece.
The Panthers broke the scoreless tie in the third with a six-run frame. Knese and Rohlfing led off with back-to-back singles followed by a walk to Harrison Waters. This set up Tyler Goss to clear the bases with a grand slam.
Later in the inning, after Tyler Wright walked and Maury Wilmes singled, both runners came in on a double by Jason Hall.
Wayne State cut its deficit in half in the top of the fourth. Three consecutive singles by Ciennik, Wiseman and Paul LaMantia (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne's) loaded the bases for Kaminski, who hit a two-run double to left. LaMantia would score on a groundout by John Skaggs (Adrian, Mich.).
In the fifth, Joel Potts drew a walk to lead off the inning and scored on a triple by Wilmes, who in turn was plated on a base hit by Knese.
Wiseman's third home run of the year made it an 8-4 game in the top of the sixth, but Hughes answered with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning.
Two WSU errors aided Drury in scoring two unearned runs in the seventh, including one on a triple by Rohlfing.
Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) tripled to right and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ciennik to account for WSU's fifth and final run in the eighth.
A three-run homer in the bottom of the inning by Spitz completed the scoring.
Brady Cooper (Allen Park, Mich.) took the loss in his third start of the year, lasting 4.1 innings. Ryan Mosher (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Tyler Hill (Mississauga, Ont./St. Michael's) worked the final 3.2 frames in relief.
Winning pitcher Blake Wixson surrendered four runs on six hits over 7.0 innings, walking none and striking out eight.
Wayne State will face Drury again on Friday at 6:00 p.m. to open the Heffington Optical Festival this weekend.
