Box Score

ERIE, Pa. - The Wayne State baseball team (6-7, 4-0 GLIAC) overcame an early three-run deficit to earn a 10-4 victory Saturday afternoon and sweep the four-game series at Gannon (2-8, 0-4 GLIAC).

Four Warriors - Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine), Scott Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) and Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) - drove in two runs apiece. Williams also scored twice, as did John Skaggs (Adrian, Mich.)

Williams led off the game with a triple and came in to score on a groundout by Martin.

Gannon scored twice in each of the first two innings, however, to take a 4-1 lead. Jonathan Dziomba, who drove in three of GU's five runs over the first three games, had an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning and eventually scored on a double steal. He also drew a bases-loaded walk in the second after a WSU fielding error resulted in Gannon's third run.

The Warriors cut it to 4-2 in the third, as a base hit to center by Martin plated Skaggs, who walked to lead off the inning.

Four more runs in the fourth, highlighted by Witczak's two-run homer, gave Wayne State a 6-4 advantage.

Back-to-back walks to Williams and Martin led to a two-run triple by Wiseman in the seventh. Wiseman came in to score on a base hit by Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova), who in turn scored on a sacrifice fly by Skaggs.

Josh Lewis (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) pitched the final 5.2 innings in relef to earn his first collegiate victory (1-2). He surrendered just two hits and three walks while striking out four.

Wayne State will play a nine-inning game Wednesday at Toledo before heading back to Erie next weekend for a four-game series at Mercyhurst.
