DETROIT, Mich. - Splitting the weekend series at two games apiece, the Wayne State baseball team (13-6, 2-2 GLIAC) dropped a 6-2 decision to Mercyhurst (13-7, 2-2 GLIAC) in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.

A Wayne State error and two RBI groundouts gave Mercyhurst a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third, and the Lakers scored four more times in the sixth inning on seven base hits - five of which came with no outs - to lead by six.

After leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Wayne State fought back to score twice in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) and an RBI triple by Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford), but the Warriors could not close the gap.

WSU starter Dane Little (Windsor, Ont./F.J. Brennan Catholic) took the loss (1-2), surrendering three runs (two earned) on three hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out five.

Brian Espersen pitched shutout ball in six innings of work for the Lakers, scattering three hits and recording eight strikeouts.

Wayne State travels to Western Michigan for a nine-inning game on Wednesday, March 28, before heading to Hillsdale for a GLIAC weekend doubleheader, March 31-April 1.
