KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Wayne State baseball team (13-7) surrendered a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning, resulting in a 6-5 loss at Western Michigan (6-13) on Wednesday afternoon.
Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine), Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford), and Ryan LaPensee (La Salle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) had two hits apiece, and Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) drove in a pair of runs.
Western Michigan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first frame, scoring on an RBI single and a Wayne State fielding error, but Wayne State was able to cut the deficit in half with an RBI single by Witczak in the third, scoring LaPensee who led off the inning with a base hit.
After a bases-loaded groundout in the fifth inning made it a 3-1 game, the Warriors rallied to score three unearned runs in the seventh and take a 4-3 lead. With two runners aboard, Williams went all the way to third base on two Bronco errors, plating LaPensee and Kevin Kadrofske (Roseville, Mich./Lutheran East). Williams would then score on a sacrifice bunt by Witczak.
An RBI single by Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) in the eighth put the Warriors ahead by two, but the Broncos answered with a run in each of the next three innings.
Western Michigan posted a run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single and tied the game in the ninth with a sacrifice fly before the bases-loaded walk won the game for the Broncos, as Wayne State is now 1-12-1 all-time against Western Michigan.
Wayne State travels to Hillsdale for a pair of GLIAC doubleheaders this weekend, March 31-April 1.
