DETROIT - The Warrior baseball team (6-15) used six pitchers to hold on for a 7-6 win over visiting Concordia University (10-10) in WSU's home opener Wednesday, March 29. It was the first win by Wayne State in a game decided by one run.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 start, but the Warriors responded with five runs in bottom of the first thanks to six hits with two outs. Sophomore Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) improved his hitting streak to nine games with a single up the middle. He scored as the next batter, Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.), went opposite field for an RBI-double. Senior Adwin Springer (Toronto, Ont.) and Kevin Kadrofske (Roseville, Mich.) each recorded a double for three in a row for WSU. The scoring was topped off on Tim George's (Quincy, Mich.) second home run of the season, this one to center field for a 5-2 lead.
Concordia added a run in the second only to be countered by Weisman's second RBI of the game on a single down the right field line that scored senior Jason Chapieski (Windsor, Ont.).

In the top of the fourth, the Cards scored twice to make it a 6-5 game. The next inning, WSU added a much-need insurance run on Chapieski's run-scoring single to center that scored George who had a lead-off double.
That run proved to be the difference as Concordia recorded an unearned run in the seventh before Jon Swartout (Allen Park, Mich.) closed down the Cardinals for the final 2.1 innings. The redshirt freshman didn't allow a hit the rest of the way and struck out two Cards to earn his first career save.
Sophomore Kyle Miller (Farmington Hills, Mich.), who worked a 1-2-3 fifth inning, picked up the first win of his career on a total of six pitches (1-0).
Weisman, Springer, George and redshirt freshman Scott Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich.) each had two hits apiece.
The Warriors return to GLIAC action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa.
