ERIE, Pa. - Senior Adwin Springer (Toronto, Ont.) was involved in all four runs, including the game-winning hit, as the Wayne State baseball team (7-15, 5-0 GLIAC) remained undefeated in league play by defeating Mercyhurst College (12-10, 1-4 GLIAC) in game one of Saturday's GLIAC doubleheader. The Warriors won 4-3 in eight innings in their second extra-inning conference contest in a row.
After a scoreless first inning, Springer was hit by a pitch to begin the second; it was the second of three hit batters in the first two innings by Mercyhurst starting pitcher Brandon Mendola. Springer advanced to second on Tim George's (Quincy, Mich.) sac bunt then scored when catcher Matt Cunningham (Gregory, Mich.) doubled to right center.
The Lakers tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with three hits off WSU starter Kyle Hill (Mississauga, Ont.). Hill got three straight outs, including his third strikeout of the game, to get out of the inning.
At the plate, the Warriors regained their lead in the sixth as Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) stretched out a one-out triple to right center. Springer's RBI-single through the right side of the infield easily scored Weisman. Springer advanced to third thanks to a stolen base and error, then scored his second run of the day on a bunt by George.
Following the run in the fourth, Hill proceeded to retire 10 of the next 12 MC batters he faced. But with two outs in the seventh, the Lakers scored a pair of runs to tie the game.
Scott Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich.) led off the eighth with a single to second base that improved his current hitting streak to five games. Springer's game-winning single drove in Martin for his second RBI of the day.
Junior Dan Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich.) pitched a three-up, three-down eighth inning to pick up his first save of the season. Hill (2-3) gave up nine hits and three earned runs in 7.0 innings. He struck out four Lakers, while walking just one batter.
Springer finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Weisman and Cunningham also had a pair of hits for Wayne State.
