MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - The Wayne State baseball team (7-19) shut out Central Michigan University (15-12) for six innings, but allowed three home runs in a 7-2 loss as winds were gusting up to 38 mph at Theunissen Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
The Warriors had the bases loaded in the top of the second but failed to score a run. CMU took advantage of the wind blowing out to left with a pair of homers in the bottom of the inning for a 5-0 lead. WSU has now been outscored 39-10 in the second inning this year.
With two outs in the third, senior Jason Chapieski (Windsor, Ont.) raced home on a wild pitch for Wayne State's first run of the day and his team-leading 21st run of the season. In the next inning, Chapieski drew a bases-loaded walk to score redshirt sophomore Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.).
Making his first career start, sophomore Kyle Miller (Farmington Hills, Mich.) gave up five runs in 4.0 innings pitching to suffer the loss (1-1). Sophomore Yuki Minagawa (Troy, Mich.) entered in the fifth and retired nine straight Chippewas. He finished the remaining 4.0 innings and allowed two runs on two hits.
WSU stranded 11 runners on base compared to just three for Central.
The Warriors return to Detroit, and to GLIAC play, on Wednesday against seventh-ranked Ashland.
