DETROIT - The Warriors lost their sixth straight game as No. 7 Ashland held on for a 6-3 win in game two of a league doubleheader at WSU Baseball Field in Detroit Wednesday. Wayne State falls to 7-21 overall and 5-5 in the GLIAC while AU improves to 26-5, 8-2.
AU scored five runs, including a grand slam, in the second inning to jump out in front. But Wayne State came back with three two-out runs in the fourth inning as Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) singled, followed by a Bob Schmidt (Oxford, Mich.) double. The two scored on a throwing error by Ashland that allowed Matt Cunningham (Gregory, Mich.) to be safe at first. Cunningham then scored on Kyle Miller's (Farmington Hills, Mich.) hit to left to make it a two-run game.
The Eagles added another run in the top of the fifth before WSU's Chris Baroli (Madison Hts., Mich.) scored on Kevin Kadrofske's (Roseville, Mich.) seventh-inning sac fly. But the Warrior comeback was cut short with a pair of strikeouts on 3-2 counts.
Freshman starting pitcher Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) (1-3) gave up all six runs on four hits in 4.0 innings before Dane Little (Windsor, Ont.) entered the game. Little allowed just one hit in the final 3.0 innings on the mound. The pitching staff got help defensively with a season-high three double plays.
Miller and Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) each finished with two hits for WSU who out-hit Ashland 7-5.
The Warriors continue their homestand this weekend with a set of doubleheaders against Hillsdale.
