DETROIT - Wayne State (10-21, 8-5 GLIAC) won the third game of its weekend GLIAC series against Hillsdale with a 5-2 victory over the Chargers (11-13, 4-7 GLIAC) Sunday afternoon at the WSU Baseball Field.
First baseman Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) doubled to lead-off the second inning for WSU's first hit of the day. Then Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) and Kevin Kadrofske (Roseville, Mich.) strung together back-to-back two-out doubles to score a pair of runs.
Starting pitcher Mat Yenrick (Toledo, Ohio) had two strikeouts in the first inning then got out of a bases-loaded situation with a line drive to right field. Yenrick went three-up, three-down the next four innings as the Warriors turned in two great defensive plays in the fourth. Second baseman Kyle Miller (Farmington Hills, Mich.) made a sliding catch in shallow right field, followed by Scott Martin's (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scoop of a line shot to right.
Yenrick, who sat down 15 straight batters, got the first two Chargers out in the sixth before giving up a triple and an unearned run. Miller then made another highlight grab with the Chargers threatening for more.
The Warriors came right back with three more runs in the bottom of the frame as Ranck hit a two-out RBI-single up the middle that scored Weisman from second. Then with the bases loaded, Bob Schmidt (Oxford, Mich.) was the second straight Warrior hit by a pitch to score Adam Schulz (Southgate, Mich.). WSU's final run came off the bat of senior Jason Chapieski (Windsor, Ont.) with a single to center.
Yenrick (1-2) pitched a solid 6.0 innings (75 pitches). The lefty allowed five hits and the one unearned run while striking out four batters and walking none. Jon Swartout (Allen Park, Mich.) came in for the final inning to pick up his second save in as many days.
Ranck finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Chapieski had two hits as well, while Weisman scored twice for WSU.
