DETROIT - The Warriors, who went six games without a home run, hit two homers en route to earning a season sweep of Hillsdale with a 7-1 win in Sunday's finale. Wayne State improves its GLIAC record to 9-5 and is 11-21 overall while the Chargers drop to 4-8 in the league and 11-14 overall.
Leading off the second inning, Bob Schmidt (Oxford, Mich.) became the third WSU batter to be hit by a pitch in the game. Schmidt then came all the way around to score on Kurt Kieleszewski's (Macomb, Mich.) double to right center. After Jason Chapieski (Windsor, Ont.) was also hit, Kieleszewski scored on a balk to make the score 2-0 with one out.
HC made it a one-run game third-inning score and that's where it stood until the fifth inning when Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) hit a massive two-run homer over the Lodge Service Drive on a 3-0 count in the bottom of the fifth. It was Weisman's team-leading fifth home run of the season, and 21st of his career.
Adding to the score, Kieleszewski hit his first career home run on a solo shot to right center to start the sixth inning. A double and two singles followed as Matt Cunningham (Gregory, Mich.) came around to score. WSU's final run was scored by Chapieski, his 25th of the season.
Starter Dan Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich.) earned the win (2-2) with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings on the mound. The junior allowed four hits, four walks and one earned run before freshman Dane Little (Windsor, Ont.) struck out four Chargers in the final 2.0 innings for his first career save.
WSU heads to Toledo for a non-conference contest on Tuesday at 3 p.m. (Gametracker)
