DETROIT - Five Warriors had two hits, including Adwin Springer's (Toronto, Ont.) pair of solo home runs, as WSU defeated Saginaw Valley State, 5-3, in the first game of Thursday's GLIAC doubleheader in Detroit.
The Cardinals got off to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Springer's first shot tied the game in the second. Wayne State then grabbed a one-run lead as Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) single to start the fourth. The redshirt sophomore scored two outs later on Kurt Kieleszewski's (Macomb, Mich.) single through the left side on a 2-1 pitch.
Wayne State added two more runs in the next inning on base hits by senior Jason Chapieski (Windsor, Ont.) and Ranck to pull ahead 4-1.
SVSU came within one on Brent Skiba's two-run single off WSU starter Kyle Hill (Mississauga, Ont.), but closer Jon Swartout (Allen Park, Mich.) came in and struck out Chris Hanna to get out of the inning.
Then Springer gave WSU an insurance run with a homer on the first pitch in the bottom of the sixth, his fifth of the year and 19th of his career to move

Hill improved his record to 4-3 with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings on the mound. The junior gave up three earned runs on eight hits. Swartout picked up his third save of the season as he didn't allow a hit in 1.1 innings of work.
Springer, Chapieski, Ranck, Kieleszewski and Kevin Kadrofske (Roseville, Mich.) all had a pair of hits for Wayne State who out-hit the Cards, 10-8.
