DETROIT - Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) hit a game-tying homer then scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th on a wild pitch as Jon Swartout (Allen Park, Mich.) allowed just three hits in the final 5.0 innings of shutout ball in Wayne State's 6-5 win over visiting Saginaw Valley State Thursday afternoon. The Warriors, who have won their last six GLIAC games, improve their record to 13-22 overall and 11-5 in the GLIAC; SVSU falls to 13-14, 3-11 GLIAC.

Ranck led the 10th off with a single that got through the right side. Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) drew a walk on four straight pitches, and both moved over on Adwin Springer's sac bunt. SVSU intentionally walked Kurt Kieleszewski (Macomb, Mich.) to load the bases with Adam Schulz (Southgate, Mich.) at the plate. Cardinal pitcher Matt Parker threw the first pitch to Schulz in the dirt and Ranck scored as the ball went to the backstop.

SVSU's Max Bell hit a three-run homer with two outs in the first to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. But the Warriors gradually chipped away at the deficit, starting in the second inning with game one's hero--Springer. The senior singled past the third baseman then Springer scored on Kevin Kadrofske's (Macomb, Mich.) bloop single to right.

After the Cardinals' Justin Gouthro homered to lead off the third, senior

Matt Cunningham & Jon Swartout shutout SVSU the last 5.0 innings.

Jason Chapieski (Windsor, Ont.) scored an unearned run as Ranck reached on an error with two outs to make the score 4-2.

WSU continued its comeback in the fourth when Springer drew a lead-off walk. After stealing his second base of the game, Matt Cunningham (Gregory, Mich.) hit a two-out double just over the right fielder's glove to score Springer from second.

Saginaw Valley went back up by two in the top of the fifth, but Ranck tied the game at 5-5 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning.

Swartout entered the game in the top of the sixth and gave up two hits in his first two innings. The redshirt freshman sat down seven straight at one point, including a strikeout to end the eight and to begin the ninth.

Wayne State travels to Findlay for a GLIAC weekend starting Friday at 1 p.m. Saturday's twinbill begins at noon.
