ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Wayne State baseball team (18-12, 7-4 GLIAC) dropped its first game at fifth-ranked Grand Valley State (24-2, 12-1 GLIAC) by a score of 3-1 Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors recorded just four hits off GVSU starter Vince Rizzi, two of which were in the first inning. Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) went 2-for-2 and drove in the lone WSU run.
After Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Scott Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) started the game with consecutive singles, Ranck plated Witczak with a sacrifice fly, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
The Lakers tied it at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single, and scored twice in the fifth off WSU starter Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) with a sacrifice fly and a base hit.
Bass (4-2) surrendered six hits over six innings, walking three with a strikeout. Rizzi (6-0) walked a pair and struck out six in a seven-inning complete game.
