ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Wayne State baseball team lost its third straight at fifth-ranked Grand Valley State and fourth in a row overall on Sunday, dropping a 3-2 decision in the third game of the series.
For the second time in as many contests, the Warriors took a one-run lead in the top of the final inning, only to surrender two runs in the bottom of the frame, due in part to defensive miscues.
Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) led the WSU offense, accounting for two of the team's six hits. His sacrifice fly in the seventh put Wayne State ahead, 2-1, but a single, an error, and a walk led to a walkoff two-run single by GVSU's Lee VanStreain.
Wayne State went on the board first after an RBI single by Matt Cunningham (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea), plating Bob Schmidt (Oxford, Mich.) who previously doubled to left.
WSU starter Kyle Hill (Mississauga, Ont./St. Michael's) gave up just one hit over the first five innings. He retired 15 of the first 17 batters faced until Dan Skirka's solo home run with one out in the sixth tied the game.
Three straight base hits loaded the bases after Skirka's blast, but Hill (4-2) worked out of the jam, inducing a popout to shortstop and a lineout to right field.
Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) and Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) each had a hit for the Warriors, who have now lost nine straight to the Lakers since 2005.
