ALLENDALE, Mich. - In the finale of a four-game weekend series at fifth-ranked Grand Valley State (27-2, 15-1 GLIAC), the Wayne State baseball team (18-15, 7-7 GLIAC) suffered a 12-4 loss on Sunday in Allendale.

Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) went 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to a season-high 13 games. It marked his third multi-hit game of the series and 18th of the season, which leads the Warrior squad.

Wayne State scored twice in the second inning before surrendering 11 runs over the next two frames. After a base hit by Ranck and a double by Bob Schmidt (Oxford, Mich.), a bunt grounout by John Skaggs (Adrian, Mich.) plated Ranck. Schmidt would come around to score on an RBI double by Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.).

Grand Valley State responded with four runs in the bottom of the second, including a three-run homer by Steve Strutz.

WSU starter Dane Little (Windsor, Ont./F.J. Brennan Catholic), who took the loss (2-3), struck out the first two batters he faced in the third before the Lakers posted seven runs on five hits to take a 11-2 lead. Nick Smith and Dan Skirka each homered for Grand Valley, accounting for five of the seven runs.

GVSU tacked on another run in the fifth and Wayne State scored once in each of the next two innings. Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) scored on an error by the GVSU catcher after stealing third base.

Wayne State hosts Saginaw Valley State for a GLIAC doubleheader on Wednesday before traveling to Northwood this weekend, April 21-22, for four games.
