ASHLAND, Ohio - Leading by one, Wayne State scored six runs with two outs in the final inning to lock up a 12-6 win over fifth-ranked Ashland University at Donges Field Wednesday afternoon. The Warriors' first four batters combined for 10 hits, 10 RBI and five runs scored as they improved to 15-26 overall and 13-9 in the GLIAC. Wayne State's 12 runs tied the most the Eagles (33-9, 14-4 GLIAC) have allowed this season.
Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) started the seventh with a single to left field then moved over to second on a sac bunt. Adwin Springer (Toronto, Ont.) was granted a walk and a base hit by Scott Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich.) loaded the bases with two outs. Tim George (Quincy, Mich.) and Jason Chapieski (Windsor, Ont.) drew back-to-back walks to score Weisman and Springer, respectively. Following a pitching change, the walks continued as Kyle Miller (Farmington Hills, Mich.) took his base on balls to score Martin. Then Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) got his pitch and singled through the right side for two RBI. After another Eagle switch on the mound, Weisman returned to the plate and hit an RBI-single through the right side to score Miller for the final run of the inning for WSU.
The Eagles, the North Central Region's No. 3 team, took a 1-0 lead in the first before Martin and Adam Schulz (Southgate, Mich.) hit consecutive singles in the top of the second. Chapieski's single through the right side scored Martin, giving Chapieski a hit in 14 straight games. Schulz scored on Miller's base hit in the next at-bat.
Ashland went ahead 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. The Warriors tied the game in the fifth inning as Chapieski led off with a right-field single. Ranck's triple to right center scored Chapieski before Weisman hit in Ranck. The lead went back to the Eagle with one run in bottom of the inning.
WSU pulled ahead for good in the top of the sixth as Springer was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. Schulz singled-in Springer and scored a run on Miller's single to right center.
It looked as if Ashland was about to make a run in the bottom of the sixth as the Eagles had the bases loaded. But junior starter Dan Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich.) got a ground ball from David Waters that Chapieski got the easy force at second for the final out of the sixth. Barnes (3-3) scattered 12 AU hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out one and walked just one.
After WSU's six runs on four hits in the top of the seventh, Jon Swartout (Allen Park, Mich.) came to the mound and gave up a run on two hits in the last inning. But the redshirt freshman recorded a strikeout and two infield ground outs to close out the game.
Miller and Ranck both had three hits, three RBI and a run scored. Chapieski, Weisman, Martin and Schulz each had two hits apiece.
The crucial conference week continues for the Warriors with a home weekend stand against #10 Grand Valley State (Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m.).
