DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State baseball team (19-15, 8-7 GLIAC) ended its five-game skid with a 4-2 win over Saginaw Valley State (18-10, 8-7 GLIAC) in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday.
Ryan LaPensee's (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) two-run single in the fourth inning proved to be the difference in the game, as the Warriors matched their win total from last season.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Bass avoided further damage by getting out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam.
Wayne State scored twice with two outs in the third inning without recording a hit.
LaPensee drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole second and scored on a throwing error by the SVSU catcher to tie the game at one. Three more walks, including a bases-loaded pass to Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.), and another Cardinal error gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead.
Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) picked up his fifth win of the season, scattering seven hits over 6.1 innings and surrendering just two runs (one earned) and two walks while striking out five. Justin Mazur (Macomb, Mich./De La Salle) came on in the seventh to record his first career save.
