DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State baseball team (19-16, 8-8 GLIAC) attempted to rally from a nine-run deficit but came up short as the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (19-10, 9-7 GLIAC) defeated the Warriors, 10-9, in the second game of Friday afternoon's twinbill.

Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) and Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) combined for five RBI.

A bases-loaded wild pitch put the Warriors in front, 1-0, in the bottom of the first inning until a five-run frame in the second gave the visitors a 5-1 lead.

Saginaw Valley State scored twice more in the third, including a solo homer by starting pitcher Brandon Fanion, to take a six-run advantage.

Tom Seehafer's three-run shot to left made it a 10-1 game in the fourth.

The Warriors scored seven runs in the bottom of the inning, however, starting with consecutive bases-loaded walks to Scott Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Hines before Weisman smacked a three-run triple to right center.

Weisman came in to score on an RBI single by Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.), who in turn scored on Bob Schmidt's (Oxford, Mich.) RBI double.

A base hit to left by Hines in the fifth plated LaPensee who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

Despite effective relief work by Andy Claerr (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams), who struck out four over the final 3.2 innings, the Warriors could not pull any closer.

WSU starter Dan Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich.) took the loss (4-3), surrendering six runs (four earned) on five hits in two innings.

Wayne State travels to GLIAC foe Northwood for four games this weekend, April 21-22.
