MIDLAND, Mich. - RBI singles by Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) and Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) in the eighth inning propelled the Wayne State baseball team (21-16, 10-8 GLIAC) to a 4-2 victory in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Northwood (13-21, 3-14 GLIAC).
Ranck went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs, including one on a double in the first inning that gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Northwood scored twice in the bottom of the frame, aided by a Wayne State fielding error, but an RBI double by Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) tied the game in the third.
From that point, each team managed only one hit apiece until the eighth inning.
After Witczak singled and Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) walked, Ranck plated Witczak with a base hit, and Hines came across to score on Weisman's single.
Kevin Kadrofske (Roseville, Mich./Lutheran East) pitched a scoreless final frame for his second save of the season.
WSU starter Dane Little (Windsor, Ont./F.J. Brennan Catholic) went 5.2 innings and surrendered just three hits and two unearned runs, walking five and striking out six. Justin Mazur (Macomb, Mich./De La Salle) did not surrender a hit or run in 1.1 innings of relief work to earn his first career victory.
Wayne State and Northwood will play another twinbill at Gerace Stadium tomorrow starting at noon.
