DETROIT - The Wayne State baseball team (15-27, 13-10 GLIAC) battled #10 Grand Valley State tough through six innings, but the Lakers (32-8, 16-3 GLIAC) scored six runs in the top of the seventh to come away with a 9-3 win in the first game of Saturday's league doubleheader.

GVSU took a 2-0 lead on four hits in the top of the first. Then Wayne State catcher Matt Cunningham (Gregory, Mich.) took a 2-2 pitch deep to the hole in right for a triple in the bottom of the third. Senior Kurt Kieleszewski's (Macomb, Mich.) ground out RBI to short scored Cunningham to bring WSU within one.

Senior Adam Schulz (Southgate, Mich.) hit a one-out single to right. A stolen base and ground out later, Kieleszewski's bunt nicked the top of GVSU pitcher Jeff Sinicki's glove for a base hit, scoring Schulz from third to tie the game.

After allowing the two runs in the first, Warrior starter Kyle Hill (Mississauga, Ont.) shut down the Lakers. He gave up six hits, struck out one and didn't walk anyone in 5.2 innings on the mound.

But with two outs in the sixth, Grand Valley catcher Nick Smith hit a solo homer to put the Lakers ahead for good. They went on to score six runs in the seventh off WSU's bullpen as Dane Little (Windsor, Ont.) took the loss (1-4).

WSU did get back a run in the bottom of the inning as Schulz led off with a solo shot over the right field wall, his third of the season.

Schulz and Jason Chapieski (Windsor, Ont.) led the Warriors with two hits apiece as Chapieski's hitting streak reached 15 straight games.
