DETROIT - The Wayne State baseball team fell to 10th-ranked Grand Valley State, 8-3, in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at a rainy WSU Baseball Field. The second contest was cancelled due to the wet weather and will not be rescheduled.

Senior shortstop Jason Chapieski (Windsor, Ont.), whose 15-game hitting streak ended in Saturday's second game, started the bottom of the first with a single through the left side. That would be WSU's only hit through the first three innings.

The Lakers (34-8, 18-3 GLIAC) took a 1-0 lead in the second with a bases loaded sac fly. Then GVSU catcher Nick Smith hit a two-run homer in the third, his league-leading 11th of the year, and Grand Valley added unearned run in the inning to grab a 4-0 lead.

After another GVSU run in the fourth, Wayne State first baseman Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) singled to right and Adwin Springer (Toronto, Ont.) continued his hot streak in the series with a double off the left field wall. But the two runners were stranded on base.

GVSU scored three more runs on four hits in the fifth to go up 8-0. The Warriors finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth as WSU's first five batters had a hit. Weisman led off the sixth with a double high off the wall in left. He scored on Springer's rip to left center, avoiding the first shutout of the season. DH Adam Schulz (Southgate, Mich.) then took a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall into the bullpen for his second homer of the series to make the score 8-3.

Sophomore Ryan Mosher (Ann Arbor, Mich.) went 4.1 innings in the loss (2-4). He gave up eight runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks. Mat Yenrick (Toledo, Ohio) and Joe Taylor (Wyandotte, Mich.) closed out the final 2.2 innings on the mound.

Laker starter Jeremy Dow struck out seven Warriors to improve to 9-0 on the season.

Weisman and Springer were 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Schulz was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run.

WSU (15-29, 13-12 GLIAC) travels to Saginaw Valley State Wednesday for a 2 p.m. league doubleheader.

Notes: Weisman's 15th double is tied-for-fifth best in WSU's single season record books ... he has 35 in his career which is tied-for-fourth in the career marks.
