DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State baseball team (23-18) surrendered a pair of runs in the sixth inning which led to a 3-2 loss to Tiffin (18-27) in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) went 2-for-4 including his first collegiate home run. Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) also had a pair of hits.
Wayne State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.).
LaPensee led off the bottom of the third inning with his solo shot to left, but Tiffin cut Wayne State's lead in half with an unearned run in the fourth inning against Kyle Hill (Mississauga, Ont./St. Michael's), who with a victory would have tied the all-time career mark at Wayne State.
Four straight singles in the sixth followed by a bases-loaded walk gave the Dragons a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.
Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) suffered the loss in relief (0-2). Hill lasted 4.2 innings and gave up just one unearned run and four hits, walking one and striking out three.
Wayne State will host Spring Arbor for a nine-inning non-conference game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
