UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Wayne State fell to .500 in the conference standings as it dropped a 5-1 decision against GLIAC rival Saginaw Valley State in game one of Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader. The Warriors are 15-30 overall and 13-13 in the GLIAC while the Cards are 18-19, 8-16 GLIAC.
WSU junior starting pitcher Dan Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich.) recorded all three putouts in the first inning, two strikeouts and a popup, but an error allowed SVSU to score two unearned runs.
Four of Wayne State's first nine batters got a hit, but the Warriors didn't manage to plate anyone with runners in scoring position.
The Cardinals added a run in the third and two unearned runs in the fifth.
Senior Adwin Springer (Toronto, Ont.), who moved into second place in career games played (186), led the seventh inning off with a base on balls. He moved over to second on a balk, and after an infield ground out, Springer scored WSU's lone run on the second balk of the inning.
Barnes fell to 3-4 on the season with his 6.0 innings of work. Only one of the five runs scored was earned as Barnes struck out five and gave up eight hits.
Scott Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich.), hitting in the nine-spot, had a team-high two hits as Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.), Kyle Miller (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Kevin Kadrofske (Roseville, Mich.) accounted for the other three hits.
