ASHLAND, Ohio - In the first game of a four-game weekend set at 19th-ranked Ashland (31-11, 17-1 GLIAC), the Wayne State baseball team suffered a 6-4 defeat Saturday afternoon at Donges Field.
Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) went 2-for-4 including his 10th home run of the season, while Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) had a pair of hits and Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) and Kevin Kadrofske (Roseville, Mich./Lutheran East) each drove in a run.
Ashland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, aided by a solo home run by Justin Randall, but a solo shot to center by Hines made it a 3-1 game in the fourth.
A two-run homer by Tyson Roland in the bottom of the inning gave the Eagles a 5-1 advantage, and they tacked on another run in the sixth to lead by five.
The Warriors tried to make a comeback, scoring three times in the seventh inning on RBI singles by Kadrofske, LaPensee, and Hines to pull within a pair, but could not get any closer.
WSU starter Kyle Hill (Mississauga, Ont.) took the loss (5-3) in his 43rd career start, one shy of matching the school record. He surrendered five earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work, walking none and striking out four.
Ashland's Josh Davidson improved to 6-2 on the season, recording seven strikeouts in a complete-game victory.
