ASHLAND, Ohio - In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at 19th-ranked Ashland (31-13, 17-3 GLIAC), the Wayne State baseball team (25-19, 13-10 GLIAC) took an eight-run lead and held on to win, 8-3, at Donges Field.

The top four hitters in the Warrior lineup - Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova), Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.), Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford), and Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) combined for nine of WSU's 13 hits. LaPensee and Hines each scored three runs, while Hines also drove in four.

Wayne State starting pitcher Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) scattered nine hits in a complete-game victory (7-2). He surrendered three runs and three walks while striking out five.

The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run homer to center by Hines, who is now tied with Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) for the team and GLIAC lead with 11 home runs this season. LaPensee and Witczak, who led off the game with back-to-back base hits, scored on the play.

A ground ball by Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) with the bases loaded in the third brought in LaPensee, and Weisman added an RBI double, setting a Wayne State record with his 45th career two-bagger, to give Wayne State a 5-0 advantage.

Three runs on three hits in the fourth made it an 8-0 game, beginning with an RBI single by LaPensee, plating Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) who was hit by a pitch for the 13th time this year, a team-high.

LaPensee came in to score on a double by Hines, who scored on a base hit by Ranck.

Bass contained all of the Ashland scoring to the bottom of the fifth inning, when Jacob Petkac hit a three-run shot to right center.
