Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) went 2-for-4 and Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) had a hit, as both players extended their respective season-high hitting streaks to 11 games.
Ashland took a commanding lead early in the game, scoring six runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning, led by two-run hits from Justin Richards and Eric Zattlin.
Wayne State cut the deficit in half with RBI singles by Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) and Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) in the third and LaPensee in the fourth, but the Eagles produced five more runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth. The onslaught included a solo home run by Jeff Yates and a two-run shot by Jacob Petkac.
RBI singles by Weisman and Williams accounted for the Warriors last two runs in the fifth.
WSU starter Dan Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich.) went 3.1 innings and took the loss (4-4).
Wayne State has a non-conference nine-inning game Tuesday at Oakland beginning at 3:00 p.m. before heading to Saginaw Valley State for a GLIAC doubleheader, which will be broadcast on Teamline, Wednesday starting at 2:00 p.m.
