UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Wayne State baseball team (25-21, 13-12 GLIAC) came up on the short end of a pitching duel at Saginaw Valley State (28-10, 16-7 GLIAC), suffering a 1-0 loss in eight innings at SVSU Field.
A walkoff single by Max Bell with two outs in the eighth was the difference in the game, as his high chopper to the right side snuck past the infield and plated Kevin Schwedler, who led off the frame with a base hit.
The Warriors, still fighting for a playoff spot with five games remaining, managed just one hit off SVSU starter Scott Schlaff (7-4), who walked two and struck out seven in a complete-game victory.
WSU starter Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) was also effective, striking out eight in 7.2 innings and scattering four hits. The tough-luck loss (7-3) snaps his three-start winning streak.
Neither team put a runner on base until the bottom of the third, when Schwedler reached on a WSU fielding error.
The Warriors had their best scoring opportunity with one out in the fifth, as a four-pitch walk to Bob Schmidt (Oxford, Mich.) spoiled Schlaff's bid for a perfect game, and Jon Weisman's (Woodhaven, Mich.) subsequent single prevented a no-hitter. They were left stranded however, and Schlaff allowed just one more base runner during the course of the game.
Bass, meanwhile, lost his no-hitter in the sixth on a leadoff single by Chase Coulter. He surrendered a double to Brandon Fanion with no outs in the seventh, but worked out of the jam to keep SVSU off the board for the time being.
Weisman drew a walk to start the top of the eighth and advanced to third base, the only Warrior to do so, but Wayne State was unable to produce a run and ended up with its first shutout loss of the season.
