DETROIT - Sophomore starter Dan Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich.) struck out a career-high nine batters and recorded his first complete-game shutout to help WSU break its four-game losing streak and defeat Saginaw Valley, 3-0, in the nightcap of Wednesday's GLIAC doubleheader in Detroit. The Warriors, who won the season series 3-1, trail Grand Valley in the league standings by a half-game with just four games remaining.
Barnes started off hot by striking out the side in the first. He did it again in the fifth and allowed just one runner on second base the entire game on five Cardinal hits.
The WSU offense got on track in the fourth as senior Frank Jeney (Windsor, Ont.) singled through the left side of the infield. After he stole second, DH Adam Schulz (Southgate, Mich.) got a timely single up the middle to score Jeney.
The Warriors added another one-spot in the fifth and sixth innings as Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) scored on a Bobby Marten (Allen Park, Mich.) single down the right field line. In the sixth, Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) started the inning with a single and scored from second on Adwin Springer's (Toronto, Ont.) second hit of the game.
Barnes finished off the Cards in the seventh with a pair of strikeouts to improve his record to 4-2. SVSU freshman Scott Roy (5-2) suffered the loss as he gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits.
The Warriors travel to Midland this weekend for a four-game series with Northwood to conclude the regular season.
