FLAT ROCK, Mich. - Scott Martin's (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) walkoff RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Wayne State baseball team (27-22, 15-13 GLIAC) a 2-1 victory over Gannon (5-41, 1-25 GLIAC) in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader in Flat Rock.
Martin's game-winning hit, which came just over the three-hour mark in the contest, brought in Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) who kept the inning alive with a double to center field.
The Warriors managed just six hits in the game but drew a season-high 10 walks. Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) went 2-for-4, and Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) drove in Williams to account for the other WSU run.
Three four-pitch walks loaded the bases for the Warriors in the fourth, but the runners were left stranded. Gannon and WSU left a combined 25 runners on base in the game.
An RBI double by Gannon's Jon Dziomba snapped a scoreless tie in the fifth inning.
Back-to-back walks to pinch-hitter John Skaggs (Adrian, Mich.) and Martin started a seventh-inning rally for Wayne State. Following a sacrifice bunt by LaPensee and an intentional walk to Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.), a base hit to left by Hines tied the score.
Wayne State left the bases loaded again in the bottom of the ninth, but Martin's heroics in the 10th gave Wayne State its second win of the day and Gannon its 21st consecutive loss.
Kevin Kadrofske (Roseville, Mich./Lutheran East) earned the victory (1-1) working 2.2 scoreless innings in relief, surrendering just one hits and one walk while striking out three.
These two teams will conclude the 2007 season Sunday afternoon in Detroit with a doubleheader starting at noon.
