DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State baseball team (29-22, 17-13 GLIAC) closed out the 2007 regular season with an 11-0 victory over Gannon (5-43, 1-27 GLIAC) in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
Five Warriors had multiple-hit games, including Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova), who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) who went 3-for-3, drove in two runs and scored a pair.
Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) matched his season-high with four runs batted in to go along with two hits and a run scored. He finished with 73 hits on the year, four shy of the school single-season record held by current assistant coach Frank Jeney.
Wayne State put a run on the board in the first inning after LaPensee singled, stole two bases, and came in on a sacrifice fly by Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.).
Three consecutive bunt singles led to a pair of sacrifice flies by Hines and Ranck, giving the Warriors a 3-0 lead.
The Warriors added six runs in the fourth, stemming from five hits and a costly Gannon error. Witczak, Hines, Ranck, and Bob Schmidt (Oxford, Mich.) each drove in a run in the frame.
A two-run double by Ranck in the sixth accounted for Wayne State's last two runs.
Six seniors - all except Kyle Hill (Mississauga, Ont./St. Michael's) who earned the win in game one - saw action as part of Senior Day.
WSU starter Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) recorded his eighth win of the season, giving up just two hits and a walk with four strikeouts over five innings. Seniors Chuck Pate (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy), Andy Claerr (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams), and Dan Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich.) all made appearances in relief. Redshirt freshman Tom Olson (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) recorded the final out.
Wayne State, which has won its last 12 meetings with Gannon dating back to 2004, nearly matched its conference record from a year ago (17-14 in 2006) but posted 10 more victories overall this season.
