FINDLAY, Ohio - WSU's five-game winning streak came to an end Thursday night at No. 6 Findlay as the Oilers defeated Wayne State, 83-64, in a battle atop the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division. The Warriors, ranked fifth in the Great Lakes Region, fall to 10-6, 5-2 in the GLIAC as UF, the region's second-ranked team, improves to 15-2, 9-0 GLIAC.
Senior Tariq Mills (Cincinnati, Ohio) got the Warriors on the board thanks to an over the top pass from Darrell Evans (Detroit, Mich.), but the Oilers scored six straight to take an 8-2 lead. Mills then grabbed his own miss and laid it up to account for WSU's first four points.
Findlay opened up a 16-4 advantage in the first five minutes until Morris Hall (Detroit, Mich.) knocked down a three-pointer. Freshman Rob Igbawua (Belleville, Mich.) scored on the team's next possession for a five-point rally.
Junior Ethan Banks (Warren, Ohio) brought the Warriors within six, 26-20, on a three-pointer with just over nine minutes remaining. Herb Goliday (Royal Oak Twp., Mich.) then made a pair of foul shots followed by an Evans layup for a 7-0 Warrior run.
The Oilers answered with a 12-4 sprint for a 10-point lead until Banks sank his second three of the game with 4:33 left in the half. But Findlay increased it lead back up to 11, but Ed Richardson (West Bloomfield, Mich.) made two foul shots as Igbawua drew a charge and had a block to bring the Warriors back within nine at the half, 43-34.
Hall started the second half with a jumper in the lane, but UF scored seven in a row and continued on to an 11-4 run for a 54-38 lead.
The Warriors climbed back within 11, but Findlay's Matt Metzger hit back-to-back three-pointers. The Oilers never looked back and led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
Goliday scored a team-high 18 points as Hall and Banks chipped in with 12.
The home team in this series has now won the last five meetings. The Warriors will host UF on Valentine's Day in Detroit. Wayne State travels to Midland this Saturday to face Northwood at 3 p.m.
