Allendale, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's basketball team (8-9 overall, 4-5 GLIAC) suffered a 54-44 loss at eighth-ranked Grand Valley State (17-2 overall, 8-2 GLIAC) Thursday evening.
The Warriors, with only eight players in uniform, worked the clock on most possessions and trailed only 24-22 at the break despite shooting just 33.3 percent (8 of 24) in the first half.
The WSU defense also limited GVSU to 10 first half field goals and 37 percent from the floor.
Wayne State tied the contest at 24 on a Joe Carr (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) jumper with 18:54 remaining. After Carr split a pair from the foul line, the Lakers scored the next four points before Will Pierce (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) drained a triple pulling the Warriors within two at 30-28 with 12:50 left.
Following a Wynn Sarden (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino) lay-up, Grand Valley's Jason Jamerson hit a three-pointer making it 36-30.
WSU was able to get within three points only once the rest of the way, at 36-33, after a three-point play by Jason Saddler.
Wayne State concludes its two-game road trip with a 3 p.m. contest at Lake Superior on Saturday.
