ASHLAND, Ohio - Clutch foul shooting proved to be the difference as Ashland (9-10, 3-7 GLIAC) handed the Wayne State men's basketball team (11-7, 6-3 GLIAC) its second loss in three games Thursday night with a 77-71 defeat of the Warriors on "Pack the House Night" at Kates Gymnasium. The AU win snapped the Warriors' four-game winning streak over the Eagles.
WSU redshirt junior Herb Goliday (Royal Oak Twp., Mich.) scored the game's first four points on assists by Ethan Banks (Warren, Ohio) and Darrell Evans (Detroit, Mich.). Wayne State's big men then teamed up for a dunk as Tariq Mills (Cincinnati, Ohio) dished off to Erik Parker (Oak Park, Mich.) for a 6-0 lead.
Meanwhile, the Warrior defense held the hosts scoreless for the first five minutes of the contest until the Eagles rattled off a quick six-point run to tie the game. WSU ended the rally with a Parker sky hook and another Goliday bucket.
Wayne State upped its lead to 17-12 on a pair of Parker foul shots with 9:34 on the clock. The Eagles came within two, but the Warriors scored four in a row, including another Mills-to-Parker score.
Up by three, Goliday recorded four straight points and a steal for a 26-19 Warrior lead. AU had a five-point run thanks in part to Alex Jones knocked down a three, but senior Morris Hall (Detroit, Mich.) cashed in on one of his own the next trip down the court.
Ashland took its first lead of the night on a four-point play by Michael Fowler with 22 seconds left and held a 32-29 advantage at the break.
The Eagles increased their lead to eight points in the first three minutes of the second half only to have WSU score seven straight thanks in part to three Dwayne Jones (Inkster, Mich.) free throws.
AU went back up by three until Evans answered back with a three-pointer, a mid-court steal and an easy layup to regain the Warrior lead, 43-41, with 13:35 left in the game. The game was tied six times from 41 to 51 until an Eagle dunk and a three-pointer put them up by five with 7:21 remaining.
Two minutes later, another three by Evans brought the Warriors within two. After free throws by both teams, Parker tapped in the offensive rebound and completed a three-point play for a 64-63 lead with 3:31 on the clock.
Tied at 67 with under a minute to play, Ashland's Jones hit a three and a fast-break layup. Evans sank two foul shots for the Warriors with 33.1 seconds left, but the Eagles made both on the other end before Evans dumped off to Parker for a dunk as the Warriors trailed by three. But AU made five free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold on for the upset.
The Eagles finished the game 25-of-30 from the charity stripe as Kevin Shorter led all scorers with 24 points.
Four of WSU's five starters finished in double digits led by Parker's 17 and Goliday's 16 points.
Wayne State is off until next Thursday when the Warriors host Mercyhurst College at 7:30 pm.
