Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's basketball team (9-9 overall, 5-5 GLIAC) recorded a 77-54 road victory at Lake Superior (8-12 overall, 5-6 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors scored the first four points of the contest on back-to-back jumpers by seniors Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich./Central) and Will Pierce (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance). The host Lakers responded with an 8-0 run as WSU was held scoreless for over four minutes until a jumper by junior Wynn Sarden (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino).
Less than a minute later, a Krzyminski triple gave WSU a 9-8 advantage. After a three-pointer by Pierce gave the visitors a 12-10 lead, LSSU tallied the next eight points for a six point lead with 10:04 left.
Lake Superior's Mark Morse hit a three-pointer to knot the game at 23 with 4:55 remaining, but WSU responded with nine consecutive points on jumpers by Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody), Sarden and Krzyminski and a triple by Pierce.
Senior Joe Carr's (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) jumper just before halftime gave WSU a 34-27 lead. Each team did well protecting the basketball in the opening half committing just three turnovers each.
The Warriors had a balance scoring attack with Krzyminski leading the way with 12 points. Sarden and Pierce each had eight as the smaller WSU squad recorded a 17-11 advantage on the boards.
Wayne State scored the first seven points of the second half on buckets by Saddler and Pierce and a triple by Sarden.
LSSU pulled within eight by scoring 10 of the next 14 points. After the teams exchanged field goals, a Saddler jumper and a conventional three-point play by Krzyminski increased WSU's lead to 13 at 52-39.
Wayne State's lead was never less than 10 the rest of the contest.
Krzyminski scored a game-high 28 points, while Sarden had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Pierce contributed 19 points and Saddler had a career-high 10 points.
Wayne State returns to the Matthaei to face nationally-ranked Findlay (Thursday at 7:30 p.m.) and Ashland (Saturday at 3 p.m.) this week.
Notes:
WSU had a season-high 32 field goals made in the win at LSSU.
The 77 points by WSU is the second-highest total this year.
The .604 field goal percentage was the best game this year for the Warriors.
The seven turnovers by Wayne State is the lowest total in a game this season, while the 10 personal fouls is also a season-low for WSU.
The 54 points allowed is tied for the second fewest this year.
