FINDLAY, Ohio - Wayne State University men's basketball team (8-11, 3-8) committed 25 turnovers as the Warriors fell at seventh-ranked Findlay (19-2, 11-1), 82-68, Thursday night in a heated battle of GLIAC South rivals. With the win, the Oilers improve their home winning streak to a nation-best 36 games.
Trailing 4-0, senior Erik Parker (Oak Park, Mich.) powered himself down low for WSU's first points. After UF hit a three-pointer, junior Will Pierce (Detroit, Mich.) responded with a three of his own. But UF center Brett Schnipke had eight early points as the Oilers led 14-7.
Findlay led 20-11 until junior center Jeffrey Ferguson (Toronto, Ont.) showed his range with a dunk and mid-range jumper to cut it to a five-point deficit. The Oilers scored seven straight points until Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich.) knocked down a trey with 7:54 on the clock.
The Warriors got within seven points on a three-point play by Parker with 3:19 left in the first. UF then went up by 10, but Parker scored on a two-handed slam and Krzyminski had another one of his classic layups to get WSU within single digits.
The Oilers finished the remaining 3:14 on a 14-6 run to take a 46-31 lead into the locker room. WSU shot 60.9 percent (13-of-23) from the field in the first half, but had 15 turnovers compared to just two by the Oilers.
Parker scored on a put-back during Wayne State's first possession of the second half. The Warriors went on to outscore UF, 9-5, in the first four minutes after the break with senior Herb Goliday (Royal Oak Twp., Mich.) leading the charge with five points.
Fouls began to hurt the Warriors as Goliday and Parker both went to the bench with four fouls and the team down 59-48. WSU rallied to get within eight, but Findlay quickly pushed its lead back up to 15 with 7:45 left.
A second-chance jumper by Pierce made it a nine-point game with 1:52 to play, but UF made 4-of-6 free throws to hold on for the win.
Wayne State, who leads the league in free throw shooting, struggled at the line in the second half, making just 10-of-17 attempts. The Warriors did out-rebound UF, 33-18, but the Oilers made 30-of-41 foul shots.
Krzyminski led all players with 18 points, while Goliday scored 16 and Ferguson added 11 points and nine rebounds.
WSU makes a trip to Ashland on Saturday afternoon to face the Eagles at 3 p.m.
