DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (10-10 overall, 6-6 GLIAC) moved into a third-place GLIAC South Division tie with visiting Ashland University (15-9 overall, 7-7 GLIAC) with an 84-65 home court triumph Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.
The Warriors trailed for the first three minutes of the contest until a Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich./Central) lay-up knotted the score at six. After two straight turnovers then a missed shot by Ashland, Krzyminski drained his first triple try of the game. AU scored the next five points before a Wynn Sarden (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino) lay-up tied the game at 11.
A Krzyminski lay-up tied the game at 13, before the Eagles scored nine consecutive points for a 22-13 lead at the 10:39 mark. Wayne State answered with a 10-0 run which included triples by senior Joe Carr (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) to start and end the run.
The game was tied three more times before intermission (seven total in the first 20 minutes). The Warriors led 38-34 at the break after scoring two hoops in the final minute - by Saddler and Krzyminski.
Wayne State scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half for a 10-point advantage at 46-36, and then tacked on an addition seven straight points for a 53-36 lead as Ashland went over 4:30 between made field goals.
The Warrior advantage was at least 15 except (72-58 and 77-63) but both times Wayne State scored at least the next four points.
After being held to 13 points on Thursday by Findlay, Kris Krzyminski scored a game-high 29 points to lead four Warriors in double figures. Krzyminski made 11 of 17 from the field and four of five from three-point land, while making all three of his free throw attempts.
Joe Carr contributed 19 points and seven assists with only three turnovers. Wynn Sarden (12 points and 12 rebounds) and Jason Saddler (career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds) each had double-doubles.
Wayne State plays three of its final five regular season games on the road starting Thursday at Mercyhurst (8 p.m.). WSU trails Mercyhurst (7-5) by one game for second place in the GLIAC as the top three teams in each division automatically qualify for the league tournament. The next two best conference winning percentages are wild cards regardless of division.

WSU scored a season-high 84 points in the win over Ashland. The Warriors also made a season-best 33 field goals, while shooting a season-high 61.1 percent (33-54) from the floor.
Wayne State also recorded its second-highest three-point field goal percentage of the season (66.7) on 10 of 15 from beyond the arc which included four-of-five from Kris Krzyminski and five-of-eight from Joe Carr. It was the third time this year Carr made five three pointers in a contest.
Even though, WSU only shot nine free throws, it recorded its highest FT percentage (88.9) of the year by making eight.
The Warriors also dished out a season-best 21 assists including seven by Carr and five by Krzyminski.
Ashland's 19 rebounds were a season-low for a Warrior opponent.
Krzyminski's 29 points was his fourth highest total this season. He also tied a season-high with eight rebounds.
Jason Saddler made 90 percent (9 of 10) of his field goal attempts, a season-high shooting percentage for a Warrior. He also tied his season-high with 11 rebounds and four assists.
Wynn Sarden grabbed a team season-best 12 rebounds and had 12 points in recording his second consecutive Saturday double-double (he had 12 points and 10 rebounds in last Saturday's win at Lake Superior).
