The Warriors were able to mount two five point leads at 23-18 and 26-21 before intermission. MC's Richard Field made a three-pointer late in the first half pulling the hosts within two at 26-24. Despite making only nine field goals in the first half, the Warriors were able to lead thanks to an eight-of-nine performance from the charity stripe.

A Krzyminski lay-up on the opening possession of the second half gave WSU a four point advantage. Wayne State would not score again for over three minutes as Mercyhurst went on a 7-0 run until a three pointer by senior Joe Carr (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) knotted the score at 31 with 16:13 remaining.

The contest was tied again at 33, 35 and 39, before Mercyhurst scored eight consecutive points for a 47-39 advantage with 7:34 left. Two foul shots by Krzyminski temporarily slowed MC, but the Lakers tallied seven of the next nine points for a 54-43 lead.

WSU was able to get within six at 57-51 following a lay-up by Sarden with 2:34 left but the Warriors committed turnovers on its next two possessions and Mercyhurst made its final seven foul shots.
