Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State University men's basketball team (11-11 overall, 7-7 GLIAC) moved into a tie for third place in the GLIAC South Division with a 71-66 road victory at Gannon University (7-15 overall, 3-11 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors are tied with Ashland and both schools trail Mercyhurst (8-6 GLIAC) by just one game with three games remaining.

WSU raced out to a 4-0 lead on a fast break lay-up by senior guard Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich./Central) and a jumper by junior Wynn Sarden (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino). The Golden Knights responded with a 7-0 run before a lay-up by junior Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody).

The next few minutes were a see-saw affair until Wayne State had 9-0 run to go ahead 19-13. Saddler and Krzyminski both scored from inside the paint before senior guard Joe Carr (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) finished off the run with a three-pointer and a lay-up.

WSU had a 23-17 lead before Gannon answered with a 15-2 run to take a 32-25 advantage with 1:48 left before intermission. After a triple by Krzyminski, the Golden Knights scored the final five points before halftime for a 37-28 lead at the break.

GU outscored the Warriors 17-12 in the first 5:30 of the second half to open a 14-point lead at 54-40. WSU responded with the next nine points to pull within five. Carr started the run with two foul shots and Krzyminski drained a three before senior Will Pierce (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) scored from the paint and Krzyminski added a fast break lay-up.

Following a lay-up by GU's Aurimas Truskauskas, Krzyminski hit another triple from freshman Larry Edwards (Benton Harbor, Mich.). Carr grabbed a defensive rebound and Krzyminski hit a jumper from the paint making it a two-point contest. Carr then came up with a steal and made both foul shots to knot the game at 56.

Ron Hollis then hit a three for Gannon, but Krzyminski answered with a jumper. WSU took a 63-61 lead on a lay-up by Saddler with 5:13 left but the Golden Knights scored the next five points for a 66-63 advantage with 2:12 remaining.

After a Wayne State timeout, Pierce hit a triple to tie the game at 66. Following a Gannon turnover, Saddler split a pair from the foul line and GU's Tyler Stoczynski missed a three with 11 seconds left. Krzyminski grabbed the rebound and made both foul shots. On Gannon's next possession and down by three, Krzyminski stole the ball and sealed the road victory with two free throws.

Krzyminski had a game-high 34 points including four triples. Carr contributed 14 points and five assists. Saddler tied for game-high honors with seven rebounds.

WSU made 13 of 14 from the foul line while the Golden Knights were just three of eight from the charity stripe.

The Warriors return to the Matthaei for home games this Thursday (7:30 p.m. vs. Ferris State) and Saturday (3 p.m. vs. Saginaw Valley).
