DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's basketball team (12-11 overall, 8-7 GLIAC/T-2nd) won for the third time in the last four outings with an 89-78 home court victory over Ferris State (9-16 overall, 7-9 GLIAC) Thursday evening at the Matthaei.
The win moves WSU into a second-place tie in the GLIAC South Division with Mercyhurst with each team having two games to play and holding a one-game lead over Ashland. Mercyhurst plays at Ashland on Saturday as the trio battles for second place and the right to host a GLIAC quarterfinal contest on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
The Warriors led from start to finish against the Bulldogs as the hosts jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first 2:10 of the contest. After an FSU turnover, junior Wynn Sarden (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino) made a lay-up for the first points of the game. Junior Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody) split a pair from the foul line, then senior Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich./Central) scored on a lay-up and the Warriors were off and running.
FSU answered with four straight points to pull within one but WSU responded with a 6-0 run as Sarden scored on back-to-back offensive rebounds on consecutive WSU possessions.
The Bulldogs were able to close with two at 16-14 with 11:02 remaining in the first half, but Wayne State went on a 7-2 run which included five consecutive Warrior points by senior guard Joe Carr (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance).
The WSU lead was trimmed to three on three occasions, but each time the Warriors answered with a bucket on their next possession.
With WSU recording a 10-point lead with 2:55 left before halftime, FSU went on a 8-5 run to close the first half making the intermission score 41-34 Wayne State.
Both teams were hot from the floor in the opening 20 minutes with WSU shooting 60.7 percent (17 of 28) and FSU making 57.1 percent on 16 of 28. One difference was from beyond the arc as the Warriors were five of seven, compared to the Bulldogs two of seven.
Wayne State started the second half on a 6-2 run to open an 11-point advantage at 47-36. Ferris scored the next four points, but the Warriors responded with a 7-0 run with three different hometown players scoring during the streak (Sarden three points, Saddler and Krzyminski two points each).
The Bulldogs were able to cut the deficit to five at 56-51 with 11:44 left on a triple by Anthony Sydnor, but WSU scored the next five points for another 10-point lead.
Ferris battled back to within six at 82-76 with 44 seconds left, but WSU finished the game on a 7-2 run with all seven points coming from the foul line.
