UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Wayne State men's basketball team (10-14, 5-11 GLIAC) was outscored by 11 in the second half and fell, 70-66, Saginaw Valley State (9-15, 4-11 GLIAC) at the James E. O'Neill Arena Saturday afternoon. The Warriors need to beat Hillsdale on Feb. 25, and get some help from a few teams to earn the final GLIAC Tournament spot.
Seniors Erik Parker (Oak Park, Mich.) and Herb Goliday (Royal Oak Twp., Mich.) combined to give the Warriors an early 8-4 lead. Then junior center Jeffrey Ferguson (Toronto, Ont.) drove the baseline a scored on a two-handed dunk to put WSU ahead, 14-8, with 13:27.
The Cardinals responded with six unanswered points before senior Ethan Banks (Warren, Ohio) hit a long jumper and Parker scored five straight of his own. The Warriors' 12-0 run continued as Goliday faked out an SVSU defender for a jumper and Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich.) added a three-pointer. Wayne State's defense held Saginaw Valley scoreless for four minutes as its lead grew to 26-14.
The Cards scored 18 of the next 27 points to climb within four, 35-31, with 2:20 left. Ferguson and Goliday then made good on consecutive jumpers to push WSU's lead back to seven. Two points by each team finished out the first 20 minutes and made the halftime score 41-34.
Saginaw Valley scored the first seven points of the second half to tie the game before Ferguson drained a deep shot with 17:06 to play. Just over two minutes later, SVSU took its first lead of the game on a three by Luke Laser.
The Cardinals' lead grew to 56-48 with 10:43 remaining as they went on a 22-7 to begin the second half. WSU came back with a 14-2 run over a 5:21 span, highlighted by Goliday's seven points and five points by Krzyminski.
SVSU tied the game for the fifth time with 1:54 left. After the Warriors came up empty on two trips down the court, Saginaw made three free throw to go up, 67-64. Krzyminski then had a layup with 21.9 seconds to play, followed by two SVSU free throws.
The Warriors had two chances to get within one, but couldn't get the tip-in to fall. Chris Johnston's free throw with 5.2 seconds left sealed the four-point SVSU win.
Goliday finished with a game-high 21 points, while Krzyminski had 14 points and seven assists. Ferguson added 13 points and a game-best seven boards.
