Hillsdale, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's basketballsquad (13-12 overall, 9-8 GLIAC) had its three-game winning streak ended with a 88-83 setback at Hillsdale College (15-11 overall, 7-10 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors will battle Mercyhurst College on Tuesday as the "second" season begins with the GLIAC tournament. Wayne State finished tied-for-second in the GLIAC South Division with the Lakers but MC wins the tiebreaker by claiming victories in both regular-season contests. Tip-off at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center is slated for 7 p.m. The game will be aired on WDTK Radio (1400 am) and also online at wdtkam.com.
In the regular-season finale, the Warriors scored the first four points of the game on a lay-up by junior Wynn Sarden (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino) and a basket by junior Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody).
A three-pointer by HC's Drew Powell made it a one-point game, but senior Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich./Central) had a conventional three-point play and following another hoop by the hosts, Krzyminski hit back-to-back jumpers. Senior Will Pierce (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) hit another jumper increasing the Warrior lead to eight at 13-5. Hillsdale outscored WSU 10-6 until before Pierce hit a shot from beyond the arc just past the mid-point of the first half.
Wayne State outscored Hillsdale 12-9 and then junior Darre Johnson (Inkster, Mich./Wayne Memorial) scored on a lay-up from senior Joe Carr (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) giving WSU its largest lead of the game at 12 (36-24) with 3:47 left before halftime.
The Chargers outscored the Warriors 9-2 the rest of the half pulling within five at 38-33.
Hillsdale recorded the first seven points of the second half to grab a 40-38 lead until Saddler scored after an offensive rebound to knot the game at 40. The contest was tied at 42 and 44, until the Chargers went on a 10-2 run for a 54-46 lead.
Wayne State was able to pull within three (56-53) on a jumper by Krzyminski and then within two (61-59) on a lay-up by Krzyminski with 7:14 left. Less than a minute later, Sarden split a pair from the foul line cutting the deficit to one. A lay-up by Carr with 5:27 left again made it a one-point game (65-64).
HC scored the next seven points and increased their lead to nine at 77-68 and 79-70 with 98 seconds remaining. The Warriors responded with an 8-2 run that concluded with a three-pointer by Carr that made the score 81-78 Hillsdale with 37 seconds left. HC's Evan Steward made six consecutive free throws to off-set a lay-up and another triple by Carr.
Hillsdale's Tim Homan made one of two foul shots in the final five second to conclude the scoring.
Notes:
Kris Krzyminski is fourth in single-season scoring with 600 points (Bob Solomon, 1972-73, is third with 623 points).
Krzyminski is tied-for-seventh in field goals made in a season at 204 with Solomon (1971-72) and Raheem Muhammad (1985-86).
Krzyminski's 980 minutes played in a season is seventh highest in school history (Mark Herron, 1993-94, is sixth at 1032).
Krzyminski increased his Warrior point total to 953 with 21 points versus the Chargers. It was his first game this year without a three-point basket.
Krzyminski has scored in double figures in 24 of 25 games this season, including 20 contests with at least 20 points.
Larry Edwards has made a three-pointer in each of the last three contests.
Joe Carr scored 14 points at Hillsdale. He has scored in double figures 16 times this year.
Darre Johnson equaled a career-high with eight points while making a career-best four field goals. He also had a career-high three assists.
Wynn Sarden recorded 10 points, his 11th double figure contest of the season.
Kevin Hicks grabbed a career-high four rebounds while playing in a season-best 10 minutes.
Will Pierce scored 11 points, his sixth double-digit game of the year.
Jason Saddler tallied 14 points, his sixth double figure output of the season, all in the last eight games.
