DETROIT - The three seniors combined for 63 points as Wayne State University's men's basketball team defeated Hillsdale College, 86-79, on Senior Day and Hall of Fame Saturday. The Warriors end the season with an overall record of 11-14, and a 6-11 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The seniors got into the action early as a three-pointer by Ethan Banks (Warren, Ohio) and a mid-range jumper by Herb Goliday (Royal Oak Twp., Mich.) gave WSU a 5-2 lead.
Then junior Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich.) dumped off a pass to senior Erik Parker (Oak Park, Mich.) who scored on a two-handed dunk. Moments later, Parker's three-point play and pair of foul shots put WSU ahead 18-15 with 11:34 left.
The rivals battled back-and-forth, exchanging leads for the next nine minutes until a steal by Will Pierce (Detroit, Mich.) led to a Goliday fast-break dunk that made the score 36-31 with 2:29 on the clock.
The Chargers (12-15, 7-10 GLIAC), who hit eight three-pointers in the first half, ended the half on a 9-3 run and took a 40-39 lead into the locker room at half.
Hillsdale went up by five as WSU scored just four points in the first six minutes of the second half. But Banks' three with 13:22 to go tied the game at 50. After the Chargers took a two-point lead, the Warriors rattled off eight straight points that included Parker's second dunk of the game and a technical foul on Hillsdale coach Ed Douma at the 11:38 mark that sent Goliday to the line.
Everything was going WSU's way as Banks hit a three with the shot clock going off for a 63-54 advantage with 9:51 left. The Warriors took their largest lead of the game (12) when Goliday scored his 1,000th career point on a layup from Krzyminski with 8:07 to play.
But HC went on a 13-3 run over the next three minutes to climb back within two. Banks' four three-pointer of the game, and the 140th of his career, pushed WSU's lead back up to five with 2:47 left.
Goliday tied his career-high with 27 points and finished his career with 1004 total points. Parker, who made 10-of-12 at the line, had 20 and Banks scored 16 points. Krzyminski had an all-around performance with 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
