Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State University men's basketball team (13-13) had its 2006-07 season come to an end Tuesday evening with a 59-54 setback at Mercyhurst (18-10) in a GLIAC quarterfinal contest.
The Warriors trailed by seven (29-22) at intermission even though both squads made nine field goals in the first half. The difference was MC was six of 15 from beyond the arc compared to WSU's one of four.
The lead changed eight times in the contest, all in the second half.
Wayne State's final lead of the game came as senior guard Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich./Central) made two free throws with 4:04 remaining giving the Warriors a 48-47 advantage.
The Lakers scored the next six points and WSU was able to get within three points at 57-54 on a triple by senior Will Pierce (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) with 28 seconds left. MC's Richard Field missed two free throws but a turnover by Joe Carr gave the ball back to Mercyhurst.
Krzyminski scored 20 points, his 21st game this season with at least 20 points. Junior Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody) recorded 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds. He also made a season-best four free throws. Avi Fogel led the Lakers with 19 points.
WSU made one more field goal (19 to 18) than Mercyhurst as both teams shot 40 percent from the floor. The Warriors were 13 of 17 from the foul line (76.5 percent) while MC was 16 of 24 (66.7 percent). Wayne State was just three of 13 on three-point attempts while the Lakers made seven of 20.
