DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's basketball team (3-1 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) recorded a 62-55 home court victory over Michigan Tech (3-3 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) Thursday evening.
Senior Shane Lawal (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup) set a WSU single-game record with 10 blocked shots and had a triple-double with a team-best 19 points and 11 rebounds.
The score was tied five times in the first half and Michigan Tech held the largest lead at eight points (15-7) following a pair of Robby Springborn free throws with 9:24 remaining.
The Warriors answered with seven straight points on a jumper by Bryan Edwards (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln), and dunk by Lawal and a triple by Bryan Wright (Warren, Ohio).
The contest was then tied at 16, 18 and 20 before a Nick Waller (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) put back made it 22-20 with 41 seconds left. MTU's Fedrick Bowe split a pair from the charity stripe seconds later and Brian Olley ended the first half with a lay-up at the buzzer giving the guests a 23-22 halftime lead.
After a triple by Springborn started the second half scoring, WSU knotted the game at 26 following a dunk by Lawal and a jumper by Reggie Stallings (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth).
The Warriors added on seven more points before the MTU drought ended (of nearly nine minutes) on a couple of Chris Baugh free throws at the 10:07 mark.
Springborn made another three-pointer pulling the Huskies within two at 33-31 just past the mid-point of the second half.
Wright nailed a triple for a five point advantage before Baugh's lay-up made it a three-point game (36-33).
Wayne State's lead remained between three (41-38) and nine points (47-38) until a Wright free throw pushed the advantage to 10 (53-43) with 62 seconds left.
The Warriors made 7-of-9 foul shots in the final minute to secure the win.
In addition to Lawal's 19 points, Wright added 17 and three assists. MTU's Springborn scored a game-high 20 points, while Baugh had a game-best 13 rebounds.
Wayne State shot 38 percent (17-45) from the floor while Michigan Tech shot 31 percent (18-58). The Huskies had a 44-35 rebounding edge but committed 33 fouls leading to 42 free throw attempts for the Warriors.
WSU continues its home stand with a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday against Northern Michigan.
