DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (4-4 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) moved into second place tie in the GLIAC South Division with a 73-69 victory over 27th-ranked Hillsdale College (5-1 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.

In a contest that saw eight ties (including five in the second half), the Warriors scored the final six points of the match while holding the Chargers scoreless for the last two minutes in recording the home court victory.

HC grabbed a 69-67 lead on a jumper by Drew Powell with 2:05 remaining. WSU senior guard Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich./Central) tied the contest with a jumper from the paint with 1:52 left. An offensive foul on HC's Nick Jennings gave the Warriors the ball and Krzyminski made both foul shots with 80 seconds left in the second half. WSU freshman Michael Henderson (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) stole a Powell pass but Wayne State was unable to convert at the other end. Following a Hillsdale timeout at the 22 second mark, Tony Gugino's three-point attempt missed a senior Will Pierce (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) sank both free throws with three seconds left to secure the win.

Wayne State had only one lead in the opening 20 minutes, 7-6, that coming at the 14:04 mark on a triple by Krzyminski. The Chargers had a five-point lead on four occasions, the last coming at 34-29 with 2:07 remaining, but the hosts scored the final four points before intermission on a lay-up and two foul shots by Krzyminski.

Krzyminski made six of seven from the field including all four three-point attempts plus all five free throws for a 21-point first half.

Hillsdale's scoreless drought reached nearly four-and-a-half minutes until a lay-up by Powell at the 17:51 mark cut WSU's lead to four at 40-36.

The Warriors scored 18 of the next 30 points for a 10 point advantage at 58-48 with 8:51 remaining, before HC rallied by scoring 12 of the next 14 points to draw even at 60 with 5:54 left.

The Chargers strong run continued as the guests built a five-point lead at 67-62 with 4:21 remaining after a couple of foul shots by Powell. Wayne State responded with a 5-0 run to knot the game at 67 leading into Powell's jumper for HC's final points of the game.

Krzyminski had a game-high 38 points for his third 30+ outing in the last four contests. Senior Joe Carr (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) contributed 12 points and eight assists for WSU as the Warriors outscored Hillsdale 40-35 in the second half. Junior Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody/Mott C.C.) scored a season-high nine points while grabbing a team-best eight rebounds.

Wayne State tied its season-high with 26 field goals made, while making a season-best 10 three-pointers. WSU also had a season-high 21 assists.

The Warriors are idle until hosting the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge with Ferris State, #2-Southern Indiana and Indianapolis on Dec. 20-21 at the Matthaei.
