Marquette, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (4-4 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) ended a 10-game GLIAC road losing streak with a 65-55 triumph Thursday evening at Northern Michigan (6-2 overall, 2-2 GLIAC).
The score was tied eight times and there was 11 lead changes with a jumper by freshman Reggie Stallings (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth) giving WSU the lead for good at 41-40 with just under 12 minutes remaining.
Two minutes later junior Bryan Wright (Warren, Ohio/Harding) drained a triple before Stallings scored from inside off a feed from Wright for a 46-40 advantage. After a NMU field goal, Stallings answered with a lay-up.
Freshman Nick Waller (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) made one of two foul shots before Chris Warner hit a three-pointer for the Wildcats cutting the WSU lead to four at 49-45. This would be the closest the hosts would get the rest of the way.
Senior Shane Lawal (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup) split a pair of foul shots, before Wright hit another jumper. After two free throws by Warner, Stallings responded with a jumper. After another Stallings bucket, Wright sealed the victory by making all eight of his foul shots in the final 70 seconds.
Wright scored a game-high 20 points to lead three Warriors in double figures. Lawal added 15 points and seven rebounds with Stallings contributing 13 points and a game-high eight boards.
WSU limited NMU to five offensive rebounds after 12 days ago the Wildcats had 15 offensive rebounds and 22 second-chance points in a 68-67 NMU victory in Detroit.
The triumph was the first GLIAC road win for the Warriors since a 71-66 win at Gannon on Feb. 10, 2007, as WSU went 0-9 in conference road games last season.
Wayne State will play its final game of 2008 on Saturday at Michigan Tech. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. at the SDC Gymnasium.
