INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - After a 10-day layoff, Wayne State (3-5) snapped its four-game losing streak with a 78-61 win over the University of Indianapolis (1-6) at the 2005 GLVC/GLIAC Challenge at Nicoson Hall. The Warriors, who held Indy to just four free throws the final 7:03 of the game, will play No. 5 Southern Indiana Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Ethan Banks (Warren, Ohio) drove the baseline and put up a nice reverse layup for the first points of the game. The senior guard then got an inbound pass and hit a mid-range jumper for a 4-0 WSU lead.

Senior Erik Parker (Oak Park, Mich.), playing in his first game of the season, broke an 8-8 tie with a jump hook at the 15:02 mark. Moments later, Banks grabbed an offensive rebound and nailed a three-pointer for a 13-10 lead. The third senior, Herb Goliday (Royal Oak Twp., Mich.), hit jumpers on consecutives down the court for a 17-14 WSU lead with 11:10 left in the first half.

Then back-to-back three-pointers by Will Pierce (Detroit, Mich.) and Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich.) gave the Warriors a seven-point lead with 8:12 to go in the half. Junior forward Anthony Ighodaro (Toronto, Ont.) scored on a pair of layups and made two free throws that gave Wayne State a 31-22 advantage.

Wayne State, who crashed the boards in the first half, got an offensive rebound and tip-in by Pierce to give the Warriors their largest lead of the first half, 33-22, with 1:52 to play. Goliday sank a set of foul shots with 13.5 seconds left to make the halftime score 35-27.

The Greyhounds opened the second half with a long-range jumper, but Banks got a steal and fast-break layup to maintain the eight-point lead. Indy cut the deficit down to five with 16:24 to play, nice cross-court and interior passing by Wayne State led to a Goliday bucket.

Indianapolis came back with a nine-point run to grab a 45-43 lead with 12:21 left, but Pierce's jumper tied the game. Then down by one, Krzyminski hit an open three from the top of the key to give WSU the lead once again.

With the score tied at 48, there was a seven-minute delay due to power failure to the shot clock. Play continued without a shot clock, and Goliday knocked down a jumper for a two-point lead. Indy scored on its end and the teams exchanged three-pointers as the score remained tied.

After Krzyminski's steal and a left-handed layup, the squads swapped one-point leads until Pierce stroked a three for to put WSU up 60-56 with 5:44 left in the game. It then turned into the Krzyminski-to-Goliday show as they combined on the Warriors' next two possessions, including a play that saw Krzyminski draw the defense in the paint and dish off to Goliday for a three-point play and a 65-59 lead with just under five minutes to go.

Parker pulled down an offensive rebound and threw what seemed to be an errand pass, but the ball landed in Banks' hands who hit another three to push the WSU lead to 70-61.

Wayne State continued to run down the time, make its free throws and force turnovers the final two minutes to improve to 2-0 all-time against the `Hounds.

Goliday led the way with his first double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Banks had a season-high 19 points, while Krzyminski chipped in with 14 points and seven assists. Pierce also scored a career-high 10 points as WSU shot 50 percent from the floor.
