GAME STORYLINES
Wayne State University hosts Hillsdale College on Saturday, Feb. 25 for its final men's basketball game of the season. It will be Senior Day, as well as Hall of Fame Saturday. HC's win Monday at Northwood eliminated the Warriors from any post-season action for the first time since the 2000-01 season.
The three seniors Ethan Banks, Herb Goliday and Erik Parker will be recognized prior to tip-off. Goliday is 23 points away from scoring 1,000 in his career (three seasons at WSU, one at Central Michigan).
Former Tartar teammates Scott Armstrong (1990-91 through 1993-94) and Art Johnson (1988-89 through 1991-92) are among seven new members of the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame. They will be inducted in a ceremony at St. Andrew's Saturday morning, then acknowledged at halftime of the WSU-Hillsdale game.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Tim Homan's jumper with 0.7 seconds left helped the Chargers defeat Northwood on Monday and clinch a South Division fourth seed for the GLIAC Tournament. Hillsdale also picked up a 86-68 win at U-M Dearborn on Tuesday night.
Cory Coe leads the league in free throw shooting (93.1), and is averaging a team-high 16.1 points per game. Drew Powell adds 12.4 points and 5.0 rebounds a game for the Chargers.
ON THE BENCH
David Greer is in his fifth year at Wayne State and has a 78-64 record. Ed Douma is 127-94 in his eighth season as head coach at Hillsdale. He has a 543-288 overall mark in 31 collegiate seasons.
IN THE POLLS
Wayne State was tied with Gannon for second place in the South Division of the GLIAC coaches' preseason poll. The Chargers earned 15 points in fourth place in the South standings.
THE SERIES
Wayne State holds a 37-28 advantage over Hillsdale.
LAST GAME NOTES
Wayne State men's basketball team was outscored by 11 in the second half and fell, 70-66, to Saginaw Valley State at the James E. O'Neill Arena on Feb. 18.
Seniors Erik Parker and Herb Goliday combined to give the Warriors an early 8-4 lead. Then junior center Jeffrey Ferguson drove the baseline a scored on a two-handed dunk to put WSU ahead, 14-8, with 13:27 on the clock.
The Cardinals responded with six unanswered points before senior Ethan Banks hit a long jumper and Parker scored five straight of his own. The Warriors' 12-0 run continued as Goliday faked out an SVSU defender for a jumper and Kris Krzyminski added a three-pointer. Wayne State's defense held Saginaw Valley scoreless for four minutes as WSU's lead grew to 26-14.
The Cards scored 18 of the next 27 points to climb within four, 35-31, with 2:20 left. Ferguson and Goliday then made good on consecutive jumpers to push WSU's lead back to seven. Two points by each team finished out the first 20 minutes and made the halftime score 41-34.
Saginaw Valley scored the first seven points of the second half to tie the game before Ferguson drained a deep shot with 17:06 to play. Just over two minutes later, SVSU took its first lead of the game on a three by Luke Laser.
The Cardinals' lead grew to 56-48 with 10:43 remaining as they went on a 22-7 to begin the second half. WSU came back with a 14-2 run over a 5:21 span, highlighted by Goliday's seven points and five points by Krzyminski.
SVSU tied the game for the fifth time with 1:54 left. After the Warriors came up empty on two trips down the court, Saginaw made three free throw to go up, 67-64. Krzyminski then had a layup with 21.9 seconds to play, followed by two SVSU free throws.
The Warriors had two chances to get within one, but couldn't get the tip-in to fall. Chris Johnston's free throw with 5.2 seconds left sealed the four-point SVSU win.
Goliday finished with a game-high 21 points, while Krzyminski had 14 points and seven assists. Ferguson added 13 points and a game-best seven boards.
